Francis Gairaud died this Friday, May 3, at the age of 89. From 1976 to 2014, he served as mayor of Cabrières, bringing real dynamism to the town which increased from 312 inhabitants to 500 in this period of time. The funeral of Francis Gairaud will take place on Tuesday May 7, at 3 p.m., in the Cabrières church, followed by burial in the cemetery.

The town of Cabrières is in shock. Francis Gairaud died this Friday, May 3, 2024, at the age of 89. With him, a whole step in municipal history disappears. Indeed, Francis Gairaud held the chair of mayor for 38 years, from 1976 to 2014.

Viticulturist and chief magistrate

Interviewed by Midi Libre, in March 2014, when he had just announced that he was not running, Francis Gairaud judged that he "needs a renewal of responsibility. I served seven terms, one as first deputy (1971-1976) and six as mayor. It happened like that, but it's too much." Throughout his elective mandates, Francis Gairaud had to juggle between his profession as a winegrower and his mayoral functions. "I regularly had to leave the vineyard to take care of the well-being of the inhabitants. The role of mayor, especially in rural communities, is difficult", he emphasized again in March 2014.

Mayor builder

A few months later, in January 2015, it was Jacques Guelton, new mayor of Cabrières, who paid tribute to him by awarding him the title of honorary mayor. A distinction highlighting his humanist qualities, his role as a building mayor and also as an ambassador for Cabrières wines. Under the mandate of Francis Gairaud, the town increased from 312 inhabitants in 1976 to 500 in 2014. Numerous constructions and multiple developments also saw the light of day in Cabrières while he occupied the chair of mayor.< /p>

Since 2020, it is Myriam Gairaud, daughter of Francis Gairaud, who oversees the destiny of the commune while being regional councilor and vice-president of the community of communes of Clermontais.< /p> The funeral of Francis Gairaud will take place on Tuesday May 7, at 3 p.m., in the Cabrières church, followed by burial in the town cemetery.
