From what salary are we considered “rich” ? Discover the calculations of the Observatory of Inequalities

L'Observatoire prend en compte de nombreux paramètres, dont le salaire mensuel. Midi Libre – SYLVIE CAMBON

Each year, the French association draws up a quantified inventory of inequalities in France. And now, it is enough to earn a little less than three times the minimum wage, for a single person, to be part of the 7 to 8% of the richest.

3,860 € net per month after taxes. According to the observatory of inequalities, it is from this threshold that a single person without children is "rich" today in France. This represents between 7 and 8% of the population. "In France, we have a lot of trouble pronouncing the word rich and we prefer to call a spade a spade", commented this Wednesday, on  RMC, Anne Brunner, director of studies at the Observatory of Inequalities.

A calculation based on the median standard of living

To carry out its calculations, the observatory relies on the median standard of living, that is to say this other threshold which shares& nbsp;the 50% of French people who have a standard of living below the median and the 50% who have a standard of living above. "Since we consider that the poverty threshold is set at half the median standard of living, we have chosen to establish the wealth threshold at double the median standard of living& ;quot;, detailed to Figaro Louis Maurin, director of the Observatory.

A different threshold depending on the composition of the household

On RMC, Anne Brunner clarified that her association takes into account all income after taxes, including rent collected as well as any interest and dividends, but also the composition of the household . Thus, the amount of the wealth threshold is set at  5 018 € for a single-parent family with a child under 14 years old, 5 790   euro; for a couple without children, 6,948, euro; for a couple with a child under 14, 9,650 ;€ for a couple with two children over 14 years old and over 10,808 euros; for a couple with three children, one of whom is under 14.

In its statistics, the Observatory of Inequalities does not take into account regional disparities, although they are significant due to differences in the cost of living, particularly on the question of income. real estate. "Out of caution, we do not wish to correlate the wealth threshold with the cost of housing because we do not know whether the latter is suffered or chosen", justifies, in Le Figaro, Louis Maurin.

The Observatory will publish new data next year, as the median standard of living changes each year.
