He stumbled upon their nest while gardening: Man dies after being stung by hornets during attack

A man died on August 1, 2024 after being the victim of a hornet attack in Creuse. He was gardening with a friend when he was surprised by the insects.

A lightning attack. While gardening with a friend in Creuse on Wednesday, a man was the victim of hornet stings. He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, reports France bleu.

Surprised by insects

The forty-year-old was helping a friend clean his garden late in the morning near the town of Clugnat, located in the north-east of Creuse. There, he surprised common hornets that attacked him.

According to our colleagues, the 42-year-old man was stung several times, including on the head. He was taken care of by the firefighters and immediately transported to Guéret hospital. Unfortunately, he could not be saved and died during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

The common hornet

According to the site Apiculture, the common hornet is “three times larger than a wasp. It is part of the largest of the European wasp species: the eusocial hymenoptera species”.

The animal builds its nest in “trunks, tree stumps, attics, chimneys, dry stone walls, old straw bales”.
