Une jeune mère de famille qui faisait son jogging avec son berger allemand a été attaquée par un ours, le 30 juin dernier.
Vanessa Chaput, 24, was attacked by a bear on June 30 while running with her dog near the Pine Lake Campground in Ontario. She tells Today that she found the strength to survive by thinking about her two-year-old daughter and her husband. The incident happened on the Trans Canada Trail, which she knew well, around 10:30 p.m.

“I saw the male that was going to attack me first… and two smaller bears about three metres away from me", Vanessa said. When she tries to get away by pulling on the leash of her dog Luna, a German shepherd, the latter escapes and starts chasing the cubs, leaving Vanessa alone to face the grizzly. “I wanted to hide behind a tree, but the bear made me fall… “He took my head in his mouth and I ended up on the floor,” she recalled, adding that she felt like a rag doll. .
“An adrenaline rush”
She was hospitalized for ten days and received more than 30 stitches in her head, back, arm and ear. She did not need a transfusion despite her blood loss. Vanessa also explains that she had "an adrenaline rush" that allowed her to not feel the pain and go into survival mode, telling herself that she was "not ready to leave her daughter and husband".
The attack, which lasted about five minutes, ended when the bear suddenly let go of her head and ran away, probably frightened by the explosion of her hair clip or by the snapping of the branches. But the bear wasn't done. He came back to her, before being distracted by Luna's barking. “Her barking saved my life”, believes Vanessa, who managed to contact the emergency services and her husband shortly after.
