Danish goalkeeper Emil Nielsen experienced a terrible tragedy during the Paris Olympic Games with the loss of a loved one.
A terrible shock. Danish handball goalkeeper Emil Nielsen announced that he lost his father during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
As revealed by several Danish media, the Olympic champion goalkeeper learned of his father's death the morning after the victory against France (37-29), Sunday July 28.
It was his mother who told him the bad news on the phone.
“I tried to hide everything during the matches”
“In a way, I felt that in the middle of my biggest dream, I was walking around with a tragic secret that only a few people knew. “I tried to hide everything during the matches, but I stayed on the pitch several times and cried,” Emil Nielsen admitted to Jyllands-Posten.
The matches that followed were not easy for the former Nantes goalkeeper, who was hesitant about returning to Denmark. The goalkeeper finally decided to stay after having a very good match against Argentina with 16 saves.
After a more than perfect run, Denmark and Emil Nielsen finally won the Olympic title, in the final against Germany (39-26).
“This final marked the end of the greatest achievement of my life and at the same time the end of a huge mental burden”, said the Danish goalkeeper.
