If the Metropolis has received the "Metropolitan regional express service" (Serm), aiming to develop the rail network around the central city, this council also recorded price increases for non-metropolitan residents.

This Tuesday, July 9, in the middle of the Metropolitan Council, President Michaël Delafosse was absent to take a phone call from the Minister of Transport, Patrice Vergriete. The latter announced to him that he had just signed the decree labeling the Montpellier Metropolis under the Metropolitan Regional Express Service (Serm), initially called "Metropolitan RER".

The objective of the Serm is to improve the service between a central city and its peri-urban area by strengthening the rail offer, and supplementing it if necessary with other rail services. other modes. "This approach allows us to think about our transport offer on the scale of the large living area", recalled the president. "For a year, we have been working with the eight neighboring intermunicipalities which correspond to the perimeter of Serm", said the vice-president of transport, Julie Frêche.

rising transport costs for non-metropolitan residents

Alenka Doulain, president of the Mupes group, especially deplored the increase in public transport prices for non-metropolitan residents. "+ 27 % for the 1 h 30 ticket and + 50 % for the book of 10 tickets , this fuels the territorial divide."

According to her, "free transport only benefits residents of the heart of the Metropolis, leaving those from neighboring areas, often workers here, to pay increasingly high prices.

"With 38 % increase in the cost of energy, and even 50 % since 2022, all major metropolises have changed their price scale, replied Julie Frêche. A large part of the cost of the ticket is still financed by the Metropolis. For the ticket or the ten journeys, we remain the cheapest metropolis in France for non-Metropolitans or tourists."
