The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced this Sunday, January 21, the increase in the price of electricity from February 1. A measure which is part of a desire to put an end to the tariff shield.

Electricity prices will increase by 9.8% for off-peak and peak hours, while those of the base rate will rise by 8.6%, indicated the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire on the TF1 news set this Sunday, January 21.

+ 18 euros per month for a household with two children

The increase in invoices will depend on the contracts signed. For a household heating with electricity, in a detached house, with two children,  you will need to count on average 18 euros more per month.

Note that this increase is not linked to the price of electricity, which has been falling in recent months, but is part of a political decision to end gradually to the tariff shield.

In 2021, the government had reduced to a minimum an internal tax on electricity to 1 euro per megawatt/hour, compared to 32 euros per megawatt/hour before the health crisis. This rose to 21 euros on February 1, and should increase again a year later.

6 billion euros

Bruno Le Maire declared that the next increase in electricity prices should take place in February 2025 to return to the "situation which was that before the tariff shield".

This measure should bring in 6 billion euros to the State this year, according to Franceinfo . "If tomorrow there is a pandemic or another crisis again,  we will be very happy to be able to protect the French", says the minister.
