The complaint filed by Karim Benzema against the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin for defamation was dismissed this Thursday, February 15. The French player criticized the minister for making the link between him and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The defamation complaint by Karim Benzema against the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, who had claimed that the footballer was in "notorious" with the Islamist organization of the Muslim Brotherhood, was dismissed on Tuesday, announced Thursday the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation Rémy Heitz.

The Requests Commission of the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) "retains that Mr. Benzema's complaint", received on January 16, "relates to remarks which do not impute to him any fact which is likely to undermine his honor or his consideration"< /em>, we can read in Mr. Heitz's press release.

"This decision of the Requests Commission, composed of three magistrates from the seat of the Court of Cassation, two State Councilors and two master councilors to the Court of Auditors, is not subject to any appeal", he specifies.

Accusations "likely false" depending on the player

The 2022 Golden Ball was targeted by Gérald Darmanin after publishing in mid-October on X a message of support for the inhabitants of Gaza, victims, according to him, of " unjust bombings" carried out by Israel in retaliation for the bloody Hamas attack on October 7.

The Minister of the Interior had argued that this position could be explained by Karim Benzema's links with the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization born in Egypt, where it is considered “terrorist”. ;quot;.

"Karim Benzema is linked, as we all know, notoriously, with the Muslim Brotherhood, we are attacking a hydra, which is the Muslim Brotherhood because& ;#39;they give an atmospheric jihadism", he said on October 16, triggering a storm on social networks.

In his complaint, Karim Benzema argued that these accusations were "inexact", "most likely false, but in any case made on purpose" and were "infringing" to his honor and consideration.

The 36-year-old player, who today plays for the Saudi club Al-Ittihad and displays his Muslim faith, reaffirms "n&# 39;have never had the slightest connection with the organization of the Muslim Brotherhood, nor (his) acquaintance with someone who is' #39;would claim".

The Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) is the only jurisdiction empowered to prosecute and judge members of the government for offenses committed in the exercise of their functions. The public prosecutor at the Court of Cassation represents the public prosecutor.
