Only 21 days left until the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. On July 26, 300 legionnaires from the 1st Engineer Regiment of Laudun-l'Ardoise will be deployed there. Their mission will be to secure the athletes' boarding phase and ensure in advance that there is no threat. They participate in the protection of the 10,500 athletes spread across 94 boats, and the 326,000 spectators expected on the banks of the Seine. Just that.

A year of preparation

An event of this magnitude, in such particular conditions, requires specific training: “First there was a phase of appropriation of individual know-how, and then simulation exercises” explains Colonel Rémy Chabaud, corps commander of the 1st Reg. "All our men were able to progress: the combat divers, the search and mine clearance teams" he rejoices.

For a year, all potential scenarios have been studied, rehearsed, to be ready for D-Day. This is evidenced by the Poseidon exercise, carried out in March at the port of Ardoise which had enabled , for two weeks, a situation in a river environment of legionnaires.

Some of the 300 legionnaires scheduled for July 26 take the road Friday July 5 towards the capital. Until the ceremony, they will participate in Operation Sentinel: "L& ;rsquo;objective is to face all types of threats" confirms the officer. " We will also have training sessions on site", but these must remain confidential for security reasons.
