Patient wakes up during colonoscopy 'screaming in pain': Deaf doctor ignores his screams and continues the exam

Lors d’une coloscopie, un gastro-entérologue de 84 ans n’a pas entendu son patient mal sédaté hurler de douleur, car il ne portait pas ses appareils auditifs.
A Florida gastroenterologist, Dr. Prasad, 84, was disciplined after two colonoscopies went wrong under his watch.
Both colonoscopies occurred on June 5, 2023, at the Tampa Ambulatory Surgery Center, the NY Post reports.
“He kept moving the scope as the patient screamed”
During the first exam, the doctor allegedly “improperly delegated” tasks to a surgical technician who was not licensed to practice medicine, the complaint states.
During the second colonoscopy, the doctor allegedly began inserting the instrument into the patient's rectum while he was not fully sedated: " ;The patient began to scream and scream that he was in pain and that he could still feel everything", indicates the prescription consulted by the Herald relayed by the NY Post.
But that day, the gastroenterologist, suffering from hearing loss, was not wearing his hearing aids and "continued to move the endoscope while the patient continued to scream, and this despite the intervention of another doctor in the room.
Not able to carry out certain tasks himself
During the investigation, a surgical nurse revealed that she regularly helped the octogenarian doctor with his medical tasks even though she had not been trained to do so. nbsp;: "Dr Prasad is not able to perform them himself", she told the authorities.
The gastroenterologist was fined 7,500 dollars (6,775 euros) and will also have to pay 6,301 ;dollars in legal costs. He is currently no longer allowed to operate alone and will have to be under the supervision of another doctor in the event of an intervention.
