The Grand Mosque of Paris confirmed this Sunday March 10, 2024 the start date of Ramadan this year.

The date is set. According to our colleagues from BFMTV, the Grand Mosque of Paris confirms the date of March 11 for the start of Ramadan this year. A doubt persisted as to the first day of the "holy month" Muslim people.

"The holy month par excellence"

The month of Ramadan, which corresponds to the ninth month of the year in Islam, is imminent for millions of Muslims in France and around the world.  Its start date changes every year because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar.

For this year 2024 (the year 1445 of the Hijri calendar), the French Council of Muslim Worship (CFCM) had already announced that the month of fasting would begin on Monday, based on astronomical calculations.

A month of daytime fasting

Depending on the observations of the Grand Mosque of Paris during the famous Night of Doubt, Ramadan could begin on Monday March 11 or Tuesday March 12.  During this period, Muslims must comply with a series of obligations such as not drinking or eating from dawn to sunset.

This fundamental period for Muslims ends one month after its beginning, in April. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with Eid-el-Fitr.
