Roland-Garros: Iga Swiatek sweeps Jasmine Paolini to claim fourth title

La Polonaise s’est facilement imposée en deux sets dans la finale dame de Roland-Garros, samedi 8 juin.

Poland's Iga Swiatek won her fourth Roland-Garros title on Saturday, her third in a row on the Parisian clay, after logically dominating Italy's Jasmine Paolini. Facing Paolini, the surprise of the tournament who was playing her first Grand Slam final at the age of 28, the world No. 1 won in two sets 6-2, 6-1 in 1 hour 08 and further increased her domination of world women's tennis.

On paper, there was obviously no contest between the two protagonists of this final, who had only faced each other twice – including once at the US Open in 2022 – and each time with a result in favor of Swiatek. Above all, while the Polish player was aiming for a third consecutive title in Paris, having arrived as the big favourite and almost untouchable on clay after winning the tournaments in Madrid and Rome, the Italian, ranked 15th in the world, was discovering the joys of a final in the Paris tournament, at the heart of a career that had been largely unspectacular until then (two titles on the circuit).

Paolini tried to resist

The 1.62 m right-hander tried to resist the storm Swiatek who throughout the competition – except for a second round clash with Naomi Osaka – proved that she was well above the rest and resilient at any pressure. Despite a break in the first set, Jasmine Paolini was quickly caught up by her competitor, only managing to score four points between her break and winning the first set.

Subsequently, the Pole was content to unfold, delivering a 6-1 to her opponent of the day, who only managed to put an end to 10 consecutive games of N.1 world at the end of the meeting. More than ever queen of her discipline, Iga Swiatek gleans a fifth Grand Slam title on Saturday. Four at Roland-Garros (2020, 2022, 2023, 2024) and one at the US Open in 2022, for 22 titles in total.

She also established her domination on clay by becoming the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win titles in Madrid, Rome and Roland-Garros. She will widen the gap at the top of the WTA rankings on Monday, while Jasmine Paolini will join the Top 10 (7th place) for the first time in her career.
