Seen on the Paloma stage in Nîmes: twenty years later, Chinese Man is still grooving!

The Aixois offered, in Nîmes, nearly two hours of intense show, mixing visual and sound creation.

For a long time, the members of Chinese Man were discreet on stage. Often in the shadows, a bit like Daft Punk or early Gorillaz, letting the images and the musical atmosphere, unique, take over.

Saturday night, in the large Paloma room packed to the rafters, Aixois Sly, Zé Matéo and High Ku appeared out in the open in the light. Radiant faces, and surrounded by a whole bunch of friends: three thunderous brass players (Rozanne, Jeanne and Laure, trombone, sax and trumpet), and colleagues ASM and Youthstar, all members of the Chines man records collective. Like a way of sharing as a team 20 years of total, graphic and musical creation.

“Chinese” touch

Saturday, the “chinese” touch was in full swing. On a curved wall of screens behind the turntables, a parade of images, taking the audience through a landscape of Native American ruins, or into an intergalactic adventure. Here, nothing is left to chance. The images match the music brilliantly, like this brilliant scene where two levitating cosmonauts get closer, kiss, their bodies merge and where, suddenly, everything ends up falling apart. The sound atmosphere then begins to explode.

The – multi-generational – audience of Paloma of course asked for more. And if several big hits from the 2000s were a little put aside – we were treated to I’ve got that thune and its Betty Boop-, all the same –, it was mainly to highlight a creation that is always overflowing, mixing hip-hop, sounds from here and elsewhere and the groove, always. A constant, for two decades.
