Rémy Alonzo  is the departmental delegate of the Alliance police union. He bangs his fist on the table and calls for reinforcements.  in emergency of around forty police officers.

What is your reaction after the shooting episode at Chemin-Bas-d'Avignon, what is your analysis of the situation?

My analysis of the situation is simple, it's once again a settling of scores against a backdrop of drug trafficking, drug trafficking is plaguing the city of Nîmes and we're fed up! We need sustainable staff to be able to put an end to all this trafficking in   all districts of Nîmes and being able to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens.

When you say that, you say that the numbers are not up to par ?

No, the numbers are not up to the level of delinquency that reigns in Nîmes and the trafficking that reigns in Nîmes. Delinquency would be normal, it would be fine but in recent years, we have seen this phenomenon of settling scores, of shootings in the neighborhoods and there it is no longer shootings in the evening, it is shootings in broad daylight. So we have already had a young person who died at the Zup, it is time to react and take the means to stop all this. 

How do the police feel? It’s worry, weariness?

They are a little jaded,  demotivated because they see that everything  the work they do on a daily basis, in the end, is of little use because this phenomenon continues, the trafficking continues, the shooting continues. All because  that the means remain  insufficient compared to the quantity of traffic which reigns in the city.

You insist on the question of means, you seem to say that it is clearly insufficient  in relation to the activity you are faced with ?

Of course and  in addition there  has everything what we see and everything we don't see; there are background investigations   which can be  carried out to completely stop this trafficking which is plaguing the city.

There are events and then the in-depth work that the police do and which requires time and manpower….

Absolutely, you should know that staff  on the ground can secure the premises and put an end to traffic in the street but there is also all the investigative work that goes into it. which is extremely important to bring down the networks and put a complete end to this trafficking.

Are your requests heard by the authorities ?

Yes and no. Currently we have not received any reinforcements…Following the affairs of the Zup, we had CRS and companies of mobile guards as reinforcements and OPJ who had also been sent as reinforcements; something which is very good because if we only send the CRS  and the mobile guards, then we congest the local investigation services and the fact of sending reinforcements to investigate is a very good thing. But what is needed are  sustainable workforce to fight on a daily basis  on that.

Concretely how many police officers are you asking for in the field and for investigation ?

Around forty numbers would be very good overall would be a very good thing. This would make it possible to properly reinforce the field units and give a second wind to the investigation which is running out of steam and which is drowned in files and which can no longer take it.

He says to himself  that at the police station, your colleagues are overwhelmed by files, that there are files everywhere, is that true ?

Yes it's true, there is an incredible dispute over files. Investigation was a path that made people dream a few years ago and currently, it no longer makes any policeman dream and there is a lack of interest in investigation which is a problem. huge.

Why ?

Work cycles which are not adapted and which are in  weekly and colleagues long for a little more time for themselves.

What does that mean, that it's difficult, it   in terms of  #39;schedule ?

In terms of timetable, it's hard, in terms of hours per week, it's very hard and there is disaffection because the legal procedure is complex. 

Faced with this mass of activity, what is the morale of the police officers??

Morale is very low. Especially a year like this where there are going to be the Olympic Games where we are going to ask the police not to take leave in July and August, that the leave  before the Olympics are already reduced to 75%, in the end the police are exhausted. After the Olympic Games, the police will be on their knees.

What do the police tell you in terms of morale, have there been reports of psychosocial risks for police officers who were very poor in their duties? even if it means ending their life, these are things that we have seen…

Yes, these are things that we have seen and then ourselves, we asked for the opening of two monitoring units, one in Nîmes for complaints and one in Alès which concerns the entire Alès police station where our colleagues can't take it anymore, they are at their wits' end. Whether it’s field colleagues or investigative colleagues.

Why ?

They are tired.

Why, it's the  fatigue  ?

Yes, they are tired. The police always ask us for more. We have had a series of attacks on the Yellow Vests,   yellow vests, we move on here to the settling of scores, from there we will move on to the Olympic Games…. The police are at their wits' end.

How do you analyze the phenomenon of these shootings, these murders, these stabbings, some evoke a "Marseillization" of the City ?

Exactly, like in Marseille, we are tending to settle scores which enter into the daily lives of our fellow citizens, it's just not normal. We are not in a state of law and this right must be respected and this requires strong action by the police and the justice system.
