Taking the train will cost even more in 2024: what increase in SNCF ticket prices should we expect ?

Les prix des billets de TGV Inoui vont augmenter cette année. Mais la SNCF prévoit de compenser avec le gel des prix des billets des Intercités et des Ouigo. 

After an average increase of 5% in 2023, TGV prices will increase further in 2024, reports BFMTV. An unsurprising increase that the SNCF justifies by the increase in its costs, particularly in terms of electricity, salaries and tolls. 

The prices of Inoui train tickets should, however, not exceed an increase of 2.6%, a figure that the Ministry of the Economy must validate in the days to come. Last December, SNCF promised that the increase in the prices of its train tickets would be lower than the average annual inflation in France, estimated by forecasters between 2.5% and 2.7% this year. nbsp;

An increase caused by the sharp increase in tolls

If inflation is partly responsible for this increase, it is mainly the sharp increase in tolls that is responsible for the rise in prices. Toll prices paid by the rail network are increasing this year by +8%, and are among the highest in Europe. They represent up to 40% of a TGV ticket. 

To compensate for this increase, the government announced the freezing of prices in 2024 for Intercités trains (of which the State is the organizing authority), and TGV Ouigo, the #39;low cost high speed offer.

"I want us to have a tariff shield again next year, but for it to be a little different: I want it to be targeted precisely at the French who have the most difficulty taking the train. The train must be affordable and popular, explained former Minister of Transport Clément Beaune, quoted by BFMTV.

On the subscription side, however, the TGV Max Actif and the Max Actif + subscription, which is aimed at frequent travelers who make the same journey several times a week, will increase respectively +10% and +5%.
