Tennis: no 1001st match for Richard Gasquet, eliminated in the last round of qualifying for the Rome tournament

The Biterrois stumbled on the last step three weeks before Roland-Garros. 

Richard Gasquet will have to wait to play the 1001st match of his career on the ATP circuit: the French veteran was stopped in the last round of qualifying for the Masters 1000 in Rome on Tuesday. Gasquet, 37, lost 6-3, 6-4 against the German Maximilian Marterer, 98th in the world.

Rome, a tournament which does not succeed

The Biterrois, 113th in the ATP rankings, played and lost the 1000th match of his career ten days ago in Madrid. Rome no longer succeeds in Gasquet, eliminated in the first round during his last four appearances in the Italian capital.

In 2011, he reached the last four, his best result, before losing to Rafael Nadal.

Three French people, among the six competing at the start of the day, joined the main draw: Grégoire Barrère, Terence Atmane and Alexandre Müller, winners respectively of the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni (6-3, 7 -6 (9/7)), another Frenchman, Harold Mayot (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) and Moldovan Radu Albot (7-5, 6-2).

Four French women in the final table

The French contingent at the Foro Italico will ultimately include nine players, since Corentin Moutet, although beaten earlier in the day, took advantage of the Swiss Stan Wawrinka's withdrawal to enter the main draw with the status of & quot;lucky loser".

In the women's tournament, there will be four French women. Varvara Gracheva came out of qualifying by overthrowing Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). Océane Dodin, on the other hand, fell, against the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova (6-4, 6-3).
