The city of Millau inaugurates its third shared garden in Cantarane

Les jardins de Cantarane sont les troisièmes à être inaugurés par la Ville de Millau à la suite de la votation citoyenne.

Having your own little piece of land is not given to everyone. Not by choice, given the results of the citizen vote. Shared gardens actually came in 5th position for a total budget of 40,000 euros. Three years later, a third municipal plot benefited the Terres Partées Millavoises association.

13 new spaces in Cantarane

This Saturday, the City inaugurated the third garden, in Cantarane, after those of Aigoual and Gabriac. For this new place, there are 13 plots of land which quickly found buyers and which have been carefully developed. "This makes it possible to establish Millau as a sustainable and united city and this makes it possible to improve the living environment of residents, insists Séverine Peyretout, elected in charge of Ecology. These gardens promote biodiversity in the city and islands of freshness. This also gives downtown residents access to healthy, local food."

On this new space, the city services worked to make it cultivable. "We saw nothing the first time that’ we came", remembers the chosen one. Municipal officials notably restarted two wells to facilitate access to water for the vegetable gardens. This inauguration is the result of three months of work from March to April 2024.

A draw

The gardens were then allocated by a draw and a waiting list was formed due to high demand. In total, on the three selected locations, 83 plots are exploited. This new garden also includes a collective space of 70m². "They must be cultivated in accordance with organic methods and function thanks to the participation of members in collective tasks& ;quot;, presents the City.

The three operate with the same principles, with the simple difference that solidarity is not the same depending on their size. &quot ;We try to promote the link but it is not always obvious, explain the members of the association's office. Each year we do two days but only 10 people come out of the 43 to Gabriac, it's not a lot!" We still have to wait for the ;rsquo;seed spirit, so that the collective matures correctly.
