Transition to imminent summer time

The summer time period runs from the last weekend in March to the last weekend in October. We will switch to summer time on the night of Saturday 30 to Sunday March 31, at 2 a.m. You will then have to add an hour.

We will then return to winter time on the night of October 26 to Sunday October 27, at 2 a.m. You will then have to subtract one hour.

Is this really necessary?

Summer time was established by a decree dated September 19, 1975 for application the following year, in the spring of 1976. The goal then was to save energy, following the oil shock of 1973-1974 and the surge in oil prices, by reducing artificial lighting times /strong> in the evening.

Recall that at that time, electricity was mainly produced by fuel oil. According to a study by Ademe, the Transition Agency ecological, the time change would allow France to save 351 GWh each year, which represents 0.07% of total energy consumption. Not really enough to motivate its continuation. And yet, he is still there.

A few years ago, the debate began on the relevance of maintaining it. But the Covid-19 crisis had called everything into question. The subject was no longer relevant.
