The Regional Health Agency has confirmed its participation to the tune of 11 M€ for the reconstruction of the Ganges clinic, i.e. a third of the cost of the work which could start in the fall of 2024.

11 M€ of exceptional aid for the reconstruction of the Saint-Louis Clinic in Ganges, such is the announcement which has been confirmed  following a monitoring committee, led by Didier Jaffre, director of the Regional Health Agency. The ARS recognizes the need to "strengthen access to care in this territory and promote access to care in rural areas&quot ;. The building permit should be submitted by the summer before work begins next fall.

The monitoring committee brings together all the stakeholders: the health establishments that are the Montpellier University Hospital and the Cap Santé group which manages the clinic, as well as parliamentarians, local elected officials, Family Planning and members from the collective of the Ganges maternity ward.

It's been a year since the maternity ward completely closed, but a local perinatal center has been set up to support future mothers in their care journey, but also, assures the ARS "to support women in their efforts, including in the context of a voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion)."

"The suspension of childbirth is temporary"

In 2023, the CPP, supported by the clinic in partnership with the Montpellier University Hospital, was supported by the ARS to the tune of €589,000. It occupies premises within the former maternity ward. Under the responsibility of a gynecological-obstetrician doctor responsible for the center, a full-time midwife and a secretariat.

According to the ARS: “The first results are encouraging but it is imperative to strengthen this structure to fully meet the needs of local populations. This will require close collaboration between local health stakeholders, particularly between local hospital and private health professionals. as well as effective communication to make the population aware of the services available. It is essential to emphasize that the suspension of deliveries in the maternity ward at the Saint-Louis clinic in Ganges is temporary. The maternity authorization remains and the Saint-Louis clinic is fully committed to allowing the clinic to resume this activity as soon as possible, in optimal conditions of safety and quality of care."< /em>

For MP Sébastien Rome, we must “reverse the process”

For MP Sébastien Rome, this meeting – which he thinks he provoked by announcing his visit to the IVG center a few days earlier – was more than necessary."For various reasons, there was a relaxation of the objectives initially set for the creation of the local perinatal center (CPP). This monitoring committee not only made it possible to identify that there is an unacceptable lack on the issue of abortion, but that local resources exist to offer both a center IVG and a CPP. There are committed professionals, a quality clinic, a technical platform that allows it… it remains to put the whole thing to music", analyzes the' elected rebellious, who regrets the time wasted. "The CCP is certainly already open, but the organization is sluggish. There is a shortage of at least a second midwife, a psychologist, and work with departmental and social services. We still need to support the training of all professionals in emergency situations involving childbirth… And communicate better. The first information, on the clinic's website, only appeared last week.
He therefore promises to continue his action by soon bringing together local professionals, particularly midwives, "to include them in the project". Above all, Sébastien Rome wants "to reverse the process". Concretely: "Show that&# 39;a maternity ward in Ganges can also accommodate the population who live north of Montpellier, around Pic-Saint-Loup, to offer a local, more family-friendly service, he says .
The MP also welcomed the confirmation of the exceptional aid of 11 million euros; to the construction of the new clinic "conditional on the opening of the maternity ward". In the meantime – end of 2025 – he will be regularly in the field to check that the local perinatal center is playing its role in the region.
