Towards the end of implants and dental prostheses ? This drug soon to be tested on humans causes teeth to regrow

From July 2024, a revolutionary treatment to regrow damaged teeth will be tested on humans.

Towards the end of prostheses and dental implants? A revolutionary treatment which should allow teeth to grow back naturally must be tested on humans starting this summer .

As France Info explains, researchers at Kyoto University discovered that tooth growth was linked to a protein. When it intervenes, it blocks the growth of the latter.

Professor Katsu Takahashi therefore created an antibody which temporarily blocks the action of this protein, which allows new teeth to grow.

Commercialization planned by 2030

"We want to do something to help those who are suffering from tooth loss or missing teeth, a-t -he explained, cited by Maxisciences. Although there have been no treatments to date that offer a permanent cure, we believe people's expectations for tooth growth are high.&quot ;

The treatment has been successfully tested on mice and ferrets. It remains to be seen whether it will be as effective on men.

If it works, the treatment will be primarily reserved for patients suffering from dental agnesia, a disease which disrupts the growth of teeth in children between 6 and 12 years old. But it could then be made accessible to everyone. Katsu Takahashi hopes to be able to commercialize it before 2030.
