Tram line 5 works: the Gambetta car park slab is fragile and will require additional work

The laying of the rails connecting lines 5 and 3 was interrupted at the Dôme. Midi Libre – GIACOMO ITALIANO

During the work carried out between the station and the Cabanes plan, a major black spot appeared: the fragility of the upper slab of the Gambetta car park, which must accommodate road equipment. These difficulties will require additional studies and work that should take place at the beginning of 2025.

While the two interrupted tram lines in the Laissac-Saint-Denis sector will resume normal operation from this Monday, the bad news about this major work came from Gambetta, more precisely from the upper slab of the underground car park.“We went from surprise to surprise, from technical hazard to technical hazard. We made the connection with the overhead lines but we also had to put two track devices on the course to operate the switches and we had to check that the parking lot was strong enough to support a second tram line. But we discovered that the plans indicated solid beams when they are almost all hollow. We also realized that the reinforcement was not compliant and in poor condition. “We need to redo all the waterproofing to protect the car park,” Julie Frêche explains.

Line 3 cut or diverted in early 2025

These unexpected difficulties will require new studies before starting the work. “We will need to cut traffic for a month or a month and a half at the beginning of 2025, but I am waiting for the studies to be completed before announcing the final schedule, to do this work to secure the car park and install the two track devices,” announces the elected official. Discussions are underway to see if line 3 will be cut or diverted during this period. This additional construction site, mainly underground and therefore with a lesser impact on businesses, should take place during the first quarter of next year.
