Two days of oyster celebrations, September 21 and 22, Place Victor-Hugo, in Sète

The public will be able to discover the collage of oyster spat on rope and take part in it this Saturday, Place Victor-Hugo. Midi Libre – VICTOR GUILLOTEAU

If you like oysters, you can't miss the Oyster days! The pearls of the Mediterranean will be in the spotlight on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 with activities, workshops, tastings and competitions, Place Victor-Hugo, in Sète.

“Hostilities are like oysters, we open them”, said Flaubert. That's good timing: a double opening is on the menu on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September, Place Victor-Hugo, in Sète. We will open the hostilities of the third edition of the Oyster days. And, suddenly, pearls of the Mediterranean!

For two days, it is an understatement to say that the oyster will come out of its shell. Concocted by the Mediterranean Regional Shellfish Committee (CRCM), the rich program (read below) will allow you to discover the marine mollusc in all its forms.

Highlighting the upstream and downstream sector

Collage, de-shelling, packaging, opening, wine pairing, recycling, oyster farming crafts… you will learn everything about oysters and the know-how of professionals. Better still: beyond the demonstrations, you can participate and play at being apprentice shellfish farmers! “The aim of these two days is to highlight the sector from upstream to downstream and to introduce the general public to shellfish farming in the Mediterranean. “This is truly our flagship event of the year”, recalls Fabrice Grillon, director of the CRCM.

There will still be a professional highlight on Sunday: the Mediterranean scaling championship. Theory, speed of opening and assembly of trays: three events await the ten candidates, subject to the vote of a jury of ambassadors.

A highly anticipated scaling championship

Who will succeed Kevin Bisarno from Marseille (2022) and Anthony Van Veghel from Perpignan (2023), sponsor of the 2024 edition?? At the finish, only two oyster fishermen will qualify for the national final, which will take place at the end of the year in Paris. But history shows that qualification is more than just an accessit: for the past two years, the Mediterranean champion has also been the French champion.

For the general public, there will also be the opportunity to be honored by winning their weight in oysters. To do this, you will have to be the fastest to swallow two dozen oysters.

With catering, picpoul and musical entertainment, the organisers hope that these 3rd Oyster days, which are free to enter, will attract more than 2,000 visitors. It is understood that the (forecasted) rain in the morning will not stop the pilgrim. Nor the oyster lover!
