The Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and “maybe” after, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Friday.

“The proposal I made is that until 2028, that is, until the Los Angeles Olympic Games, we will leave the rings on the Eiffel Tower and the Agitos (Paralympic symbol) on the Champs-Elysées”, declared Anne Hidalgo during a press conference.

“And if we still can't do without these major symbols that will remind us that the Games were not just a parenthesis, maybe after 2028 they will remain. Maybe not, we'll see", added the elected official, stressing that the decision was up to the City of Paris, the owner of the monument.

Do not damage the structure

Anne Hidalgo announced this weekend in the press that the rings would "stay on the Eiffel Tower" after the Paralympic Games, with the agreement of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but without specifying the duration.

The IOC is conducting a feasibility study to replace the current rings with new rings, just as big but lighter, so as not to damage the structure.

The five rings representing the five continents have been enthroned since June on the emblematic monument of the French capital, on the Seine side.
