Vacation turns into a nightmare: stricken with gastro, passengers on a cruise ship end up confined to their cabin

Their vacation didn't go as planned. They were leisurely sailing on a 14-night cruise around the Canary Islands, departing from Southampton, United Kingdom.

Hundreds of passengers, 250 according to Slate, were then vomited. In an attempt to stem the epidemic, those affected by the virus were isolated in their cabin aboard the Ventura de la P & O. Holidaymakers presented "gastrointestinal symptoms", according to the BBC .

The company said enhanced health protocols " had been put in place, without confirming the number of sick people on board.

Isolation

A "reinforced and extensive disinfection" has been carried out, the on-board laundromats are closed and passengers are no longer allowed to serve themselves in buffets. However, the ship is not in quarantine but the affected people remain well isolated.

"Ensuring the health and well-being of all guests and crew is our top priority", added the spokesperson for P & O to the BBC.
