After dismissing Luxembourg in the play-off semi-finals (2-0), Georgia had a date with history this Tuesday. In Tbilisi, the selection led by Willy Sagnol was only 90 minutes away from a very first Euro qualification. Its evening opponent, Greece, 49th in the FIFA rankings, could, on paper, appear favorites, against the Caucasians, 77th.

However, after 90 minutes of play, the two teams were neck and neck and could not decide between themselves (0-0). The 30 minutes of extra time changed nothing, and qualification was then decided on penalties.

And despite a missed penalty on a strike from Mikautadze, which must have given the Georgian supporters a cold sweat, Kvaratskhelia's teammates won the session thanks to Kvekveskiri, who converted the fifth shot. A match won 4-2 on penalties, which caused an invasion of the pitch by Georgian fans following their country's first qualification for a major international competition.

At the Euro, Georgia will be in Group F, along with Portugal, the Czech Republic and Turkey.
