Halfway through, while in a group of pursuers to compete for a medal, the Frenchwoman Loana Lecomte fell heavily.

After 45 minutes of racing, while her compatriot Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, who had started solo, was leading the race, Loana Lecomte was part of a group of three riders, chasing the bronze medal, behind the Dutchwoman Pieterse.

In a technical section with rocks, the 24-year-old Frenchwoman made a mistake by falling heavily before remaining on the ground, dazed, letting her medal hopes.

The cyclist gave up and was evacuated on a stretcher to the cheers of the spectators: “Loana, Loana, Loana”.
