At least three deaths were reported on Monday, August 26, in western and southern Ukraine, the target of a massive Russian attack on a large part of the country, Ukrainian officials announced.

On Telegram, the heads of the Dnipropetrovsk region in the southeast of the country and Zaporizhzhia in the south, as well as the mayor of Lutsk in the northwest, reported one casualty in each of their areas. In total, the massive Russian attack reportedly left at least three people dead. 

Several areas targeted

"The provisional toll is one dead, a 69-year-old man", explained Sergiy Lysak, the regional administrator of Dnipropetrovsk.

"In the morning, the aggressor attacked the region en masse. Explosions were heard in the Dnipro and Kryvyi Rig districts, two major mining towns, he said.

Further south, “Russians killed a civilian in the Zaporizhzhia district” , for his part, said Ivan Fedoro, the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional administration, “The enemy struck near a private house”, he explained.

In the city of Lutsk, where there is a major air base, “a residential building was damaged”, Mayor Igor Polishchuk also said, specifying that one person had died there.

Explosions also rang out on Monday morning above the Ukrainian capital kyiv, AFP journalists observed.

In the sky of the capital, small clouds of smoke from anti-aircraft defenses were seen, as well as a diffuse cloud of black smoke over the eastern part of the city, according to these journalists.

“Please stay calm in shelters”, the Telegram account of the city of Kiev warned.

Power cuts

On the streets, many residents hid in covered alleys or gathered near subway and underground entrances that serve as shelters, a journalist.

Ukrainian energy operator DTEK also announced some power outages. "Electrical engineers are working to restore power", the capital's city hall said in a statement.

Russia has regularly launched airstrikes against Ukraine, some targeting the country's energy infrastructure and cutting off power to millions of Ukrainians.

Monday's attack also targeted electrical installations in the Lviv region in western Ukraine. country.

“As a result, there are partial power outages in Lviv and the region”, its governor Maksym Kozytsky said on Telegram.

Earlier, an attack on an industrial facility in the central Poltava region injured five people, governor Filip Pronin said.
