Every day, Midi Libre takes stock of the situation in Ukraine. This Sunday, May 5, 2024, discover the latest news around this conflict.

Several Russian strikes left three dead and sixteen injured on Sunday in the east and north-east of Ukraine, particularly in Kharkiv, the country's second city and very regularly targeted, indicated local authorities this Sunday, May 5. The attacks took place while Orthodox Christians in Ukraine and Russia are celebrating Easter.

A rocket attack killed two people in Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region (east), its governor, Vadim Filashkin, said in a message on Telegram. The town is located about 60 km northwest of the city of Donetsk, the capital of the Russian-held region which Moscow claims to annex.

A third person died in a Russian strike against Monatchynivkan, according to the governor of the Kharkiv region (north-east), Oleg Synegoubov. The body of an 88-year-old woman was “pulled out of the rubble" of a house, he said.

Plane-dropped bombs

Earlier, Oleg Synegoubov announced that another attack had left at least ten injured in Kharkiv. He had claimed on Telegram that Moscow forces had struck the center of the city with "a guided aerial bomb". The Russian army is intensifying the use of these guided bombs dropped by plane, with very destructive power and equipped with fins allowing them to glide to increase their radius of action.

Another attack during the night left six people injured, including a little girl born in 2015, Oleg Synegoubov previously indicated.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 24 Iranian-made Shahed drones into its territory overnight, and 23 of them were shot down.

Ukraine on the menu of discussions between Macron and Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Paris on Sunday for a two-day official visit during which Emmanuel Macron will encourage him to reduce trade imbalances and try to convince him to put pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

"As China is one of Russia's main partners, our goal is to use its influence on Moscow in order to change Moscow's calculations and to help contribute to the resolution of the conflict", declared the advisor to the Elysée.
