A 26-year-old man must be tried this Tuesday, April 23 in Paris for having threatened to kill the principal of the Maurice Ravel high school on the internet, after an altercation with a BTS student to get her to remove her veil, a case which sparked a wave of indignation in France.

Four weeks after the resignation of the principal of the Maurice Ravel high school in Paris, following the death threats of which he was the victim on social networks after his altercation with a student of the establishment, a young man of 26 years old must appear in court this Tuesday, April 23.

The defendant, who is the brother of the student in question, allegedly made his threats after his sister reported to him what had happened in the school.

According to her, the student of Muslim faith was "slapped" by the principal because she refused to take off her veil. But the young girl 's version would be false, according to the principal’s lawyer.

Recalling the facts

On February 28, the principal had "reminded three students of their obligation to remove their veil" in the premises of the establishment, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. "One of them, an adult and studying in BTS, had ignored the principal, which caused an altercation", according to the same source.

Death threats against the principal were then made on the internet. The investigation by the national center for the fight against online hatred, a specialized division of the Paris prosecutor's office, led to the arrest of the suspect.

The student, for his part, filed a complaint "for violence which did not result in incapacity for work" , and the principal for "act of intimidation towards a person participating in the execution of a public service mission for obtain an exemption from the rules governing this service".

He then announced his departure for "security reasons", according to a message from his successor. According to the rectorate, the civil servant benefited at his request from "early departure" retirement, expected in a few months.

The Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, announced at the end of March a complaint for "slanderous denunciation" against the young woman.

On March 6, a senatorial report from a commission of inquiry pointed out the "terrible loneliness of teachers in the face of threats and attacks", urging the State to initiate a "proactive approach" and National Education to "take back control" to defend secularism in schools.

Five years in prison and 45,000 euros fine

The defendant who was to be tried in mid-March had requested time to prepare his defense. According to Me Lec, he is suspected of having published a message on social networks proclaiming: "this dog must be burned!".

He must appear Tuesday afternoon for "public provocation without effect to commit willful harm to life". Placed under judicial supervision, he faces five years of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.
