Une convention a été signée en mairie ce mercredi.
Gustave Brugidou, the president of the historical and scientific society of Sète and its region, announced it at the town hall this Wednesday after signing the deposit agreement with François Commeinhes, mayor of Sète. of a large number of documents in the municipal archives. This will be his last official signing. After 16 years of good and loyal service at the head of this learned society created in 1963, he handed over the reins. His successor, Jean-Renaud Cuaz (author and publisher who has just taken over the editions L'An tomorrow) will be officially inducted on January 26 at the end of the general assembly of the L' #39;association.
The last act of the future ex-president of the SEHSSER was to entrust over sixty documents to the care of Clémentine Markides, the director of the municipal archives. "This is not a donation but a deposit, he declared in the preamble so that these documents are not only well preserved but can be consulted."
Three of them, rather original, were presented for all to see: the bound issues dating from 1846 and 1847 of the Vigie de Cet, commercial bulletin , maritime and literary "appearing on Wednesday after the market" and acquired from a collector. Proof that journalistic life was very active in the 19th century.
An undated map of the southern part of Languedoc
Second curiosity, this time unearthed in the street, a public archive register containing the first water supply contracts for the town of Cet (years from 1863 to 1866)' ;nbsp; "fixing the conditions of subscription to the waters of Issanka", for such subscriber, at such address, captured on such pipeline with a quantity and precise use. Finally, included in the lot presented was a framed map of "the southern part of Languedoc", published in Amsterdam but undated, where Sète only appears in the form of a hill named "mont de Septo". The coastline with its unconsolidated lagoons suggested a late Middle Ages origin. The first three issues of the Midi Libre newspaper (August 27, 28 and 29, 1944) will be the subject of a second deposit agreement. This is a donation from Bernard Baraillé, head of the Midi Libre agency in Sète from 1957 to 1989 and one of the founders of the historical society. nbsp;

An essential partner for archives
Clémentine Markides was delighted with this deposit which will benefit from the Occitanie Livre et lecture digitization program. "The Historical Society is an essential partner which, with its deposits, completes our public archives and also provides us with private documents. They carry out work that we cannot do."
Wanted notice
2024 will be the year of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Sète which took place on August 21, 1944. The Historical Society plans to celebrate this anniversary with an exhibition during Saint-Louis. To this end, the association launched a call on social networks to find 27 photos taken by Arsène Chavin at a time when a large part of the city (Saint-Louis mole, lighthouse, & ;nbsp;docks, bridges, ammunition depot…) had been destroyed by the Germans before their departure. "It's a well-identified collection of 221 photos which have been shown very little, explained Gustave Brugidou. We are missing 27. We just found one."
