Women's Tour de France: Demi Vollering beaten in sprint by Puck Pieterse, still retains yellow jersey

Demi Vollering remains in yellow after the 4th stage of the women's Tour de France MAXPPP – BAS CZERWINSKI

Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse won the 4th stage of the women's Tour de France, beating her compatriot Demi Vollering and Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma on Wednesday in Liège.

Vollering kept her yellow leader's jersey on the eve of the peloton's arrival in France, in Amnéville, at the end of a stage that started in Bastogne in the Belgian Ardennes.

Pieterse, 22, specialist in mountain biking and cyclo-cross, scored his first professional success on the road.

The young prodigy of the Fenix-Deceuninck team managed to follow the two favorites of the Tour, Vollering and Niewiadoma, in the last difficulty of the day, the terrible climb of La Roche-aux- Falcons and its passages at 14% 13 kilometers from the line.

The French Juliette Labous, Evita Muzic and Cédrine Kerbaol, candidates for the podium, did not manage to follow but still limited the gaps by finishing around thirty seconds behind Pieterse.

Vollering is already consolidating his yellow jersey

In the general classification, Vollering is 22 seconds ahead of the winner of the day and 34 seconds over Niewiadoma. Labous is fifth at 56 seconds while Kerbaol, white jersey of the best young person last year, is in 9th position at 1 min 04 sec.

Thursday, the peloton will arrive in France at Amnéville for the fifth stage starting from Bastogne in the Belgian Ardennes. A final opportunity for the sprinters to shine before facing the hills of the Jura, Vosges and Alps from Friday to Sunday.
