The City of Millau votes for a subsidy for the future SPA shelter planned for 2026 in Aguessac

Le futur refuge-fourrière de la SPA devrait ouvrir en mars 2026 sur un terrain de 2 hectares à Aguessac près de Millau et d’un échangeur de l’A75. D.R – C.L ARCHITECTURE

Requested by the SPA (animal protection society) in its project to build a new shelter in Aguessac, the City of Millau has just voted, in municipal council, an investment subsidy of 5,000 € . Work should begin next October for delivery estimated in March 2026.

The project led by the SPA (animal protection society) to build a new pound shelter in Aguessac to replace the current one located on Route de Paulhe near Millau is not new. But he has just received official financial support from the City. Municipal elected officials, solicited in the same way as their colleagues from the Millau Grands Causses Community of Communes, recently voted for an investment grant of 5,000 euros.

"The SPA, a recognized public utility association, has acquired land in the town of Aguessac to build a new refuge" , unfolds the summary note submitted to the vote of Millavois municipal elected officials. "This 2.1 hectare site represents a major interest for the link between man and animal within the department of Aveyron. It takes over from the Millau site, operated for around fifty years which has created a real link between the SPA and the town."

An estimated cost of 6.7 M€ by the SPA

The Aguessac land, located at an A75 interchange, was acquired by the SPA in September 2021. With the idea, therefore, of building a new refuge there to replace the current one, located on Route de Paulhe and dating from 1976, no longer really adapted to the needs. With a total cost estimated at 6.7 M€ (excluding land). The SPA, which submitted the building permit at the end of last March, is currently carrying out a consultation phase before work. These should begin next October for final delivery hoped for in March 2026.

Designed by the CL Architecture firm based in Montbazens, in Aveyron, the future new generation shelter-pound will be made up of buildings with mixed metal/wood frames. It was worked "architectural coherence in order to avoid mimicry " and for"feel the village spirit". Another goal pursued by the architects: "minimize the volumes in order to give a human and reassuring scale to the site."< /p>

More relationships between men, nature and welcomed animals

More generally, the SPA highlights "the development of a concept of a new refuge" where is "rethought the overall functioning of the site around the relationship between the animals hosted, man and nature." There will thus be spaces adapted for each species: accommodation in "nature village" for dogs (three quarters will benefit), a "habitat respectful of facets of cat behavior" not forgetting “spaces adapted to farm animals and NAC (new pets)”.

The future Aguessac site will also include landscaping, educational panels to raise awareness of the animal cause as well as outdoor spaces dedicated to welcoming visitors. So many promises to which is added that of concern for the environment. As detailed by the City of Millau: “the chosen site is intended to be exemplary in its environmental integration, right from the start of the work (eco-responsible clauses in calls for tender, site planting, economical water management, etc.). "

Ultimately, from March 2026, the site will be open to all (including people with disabilities) and, insists the City, "will create eight full-time jobs."
