Global warming: Verdon Gorges, Chenonceau Castle… here are the emblematic places that could disappear by 2100

Droughts, rising waters, melting ice, these natural events could affect France. And in 2100, because of global warming, emblematic French sites could disappear.

Scientists have asked themselves what France would look like in 75 years, in 2100. If France does not review its environmental objectives, it would be at + 4 °C. Emblematic French sites could disappear, places revealed by France Info.

The effects of drought

The Verdon Gorges, a group of gorges located in Provence between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Var, which already experienced a major drought two years ago, could have disappeared in 75 years, along with the Sainte-Croix lake at the exit of the gorges. Rivers could also suffer, the Cher, a tributary of the Loire could shrink and weaken the foundations of the Château de Chenonceau.

And the Mer de Glace, a valley glacier in the Alps located on the Mont Blanc massif, in the French department of Haute-Savoie in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, which continues to melt by an average of four meters per year, could have completely disappeared by 2100.

What solutions

Any melting of ice will cause water levels to rise. The island of Oléron is being prepared with rock dikes, and the sea level would rise by 75 centimeters.

“The main way to combat the impact is to limit our greenhouse gas emissions on a collective scale,” said Benjamin Crettenaud, co-author of the report by the Climate Action Network, an association that brings together 27 organizations involved in the fight against climate change.
