Moyens insuffisants, diagnostics sous-estimés… après l’alerte des magistrats sur l’enfance en danger, le 6 mai dernier, les médecins montent à leur tour au créneau.

In a succinct, but extremely alarming twenty-page report, the National Academy of Medicine warns: every five days, in France, a child dies from physical abuse.

A shocking figure as the National Assembly launched, on April 30, a commission of inquiry into the dysfunctions of social assistance for children ( ASE). The observation also comes after May 6, the magistrates' union took stock of a "system that is cracking", < /em>3,335 placements of children in danger are not carried out according to magistrates.

This time, it is the doctors who are alerting, and who are making recommendations to "improve identification, diagnosis and care in the health sector". Car "violence suffered during childhood represents a serious loss of opportunity in terms of life expectancy, health, development and insertion", they recall.

This report, "limited to physical abuse, does not address sexual abuse", they specify .

One child in ten abused

"The diagnosis remains underestimated", even "trivialized& quot;, they estimate. According to them, "one child in ten" is mistreated, "all categories of mistreatment combined".

Another observation: despite the "recent ministerial plans which provide for numerous protection measures including the deployment of pediatric reception units for children in danger", the UAPEDs, the Academy points out "a persistent insufficiency of human resources in the sectors of the UAPEDs, school medicine, PMI and child psychiatry".

The Academy issues six recommendations: "Priority hospitalization of any child victim or suspect of abuse until all the elements of the diagnosis are established" ; "a strengthening of the human resources of UAPEDs by integrating child psychiatry time" ; "a strengthening of the identification of risk situations from maternity" ; "a strengthening of the protection and support of doctors so that they no longer hesitate to report situations of mistreatment" ; "the extension of the perimeter of number 119", child in danger alert number, "to doctors and health personnel" ; "the creation of a national register to monitor epidemiology and judge the effectiveness of the measures taken".
