The joint press release of the NFP parties

The President of the Republic announced today (Wednesday, September 4, 2024), after weeks of pretense and nearly two months since the end of the legislative elections, the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister.

“In doing so, he reaffirmed his total contempt for the millions of French people who turned out in large numbers to vote. The President deliberately chose to turn his back on the logic of our institutions by refusing to name the coalition that came out on top, even though it had stated its willingness to seek compromises text by text to the National Assembly.

Disregarding the vote of the electorate, the President of the Republic has chosen to appoint a Prime Minister dependent on the support of the National Rally, from a party that won 5.41% in the elections and which has not committed to against the extreme right between the two rounds of the legislative elections.

By thus brushing aside the message sent by the French people of a clear and massive rejection of the National Rally and its ideas coming to power, the President of the Republic is taking responsibility for increasing the divisions and instability into which these last seven years had already plunged our country.

Faithful to the commitments made during the electoral campaign to carry a program of rupture with Macronism, we will ask for the censure of the Barnier government and we will continue to work tirelessly to propose to the French people a policy even to respond to social, climatic and democratic emergencies."
