“A joke in bad taste”: an individual shouts “Allah Akbar”, in the middle of mass, in the Saint-Charles chapel in Montpellier

The accused is an Albanian, in an irregular situation on French territory and aged 33. Arrested just after the events by the national police, he was placed in police custody.

This Thursday, March 28, around 6 p.m., while a mass was being celebrated in the Saint-Charles chapel, located Place Albert-1er in Montpellier, an individual burst in and started shouting "Allah Akbar" ("God is greater than all",< /em> in Arabic).

In the current context, this untimely intrusion obviously created a certain excitement among the priest and his parishioners. However, the accused, apparently unarmed, immediately left without having committed any offense or damage.

Drunk and on medication

Immediately informed, a patrol of national police officers was dispatched to the site while the suspect was located by agents from the city's urban supervision center. He was finally arrested without the slightest resistance at the Albert-1er tram stop near the chapel.

He is an Albanian aged 33, in an irregular situation on the national territory. According to our information, he explained during his police custody hearing that he made "a joke in bad taste under the influence of alcohol and some medication".

Will he appear in court soon or be placed in an administrative detention center with a view to his expulsion ? History, for the moment, does not say so.
