Yarra dans son atelier, à la Halle Tropisme.

Yarra Sanchez, a French-American artist, has found her creative haven in Montpellier, where she has her ceramics studio at the Halle Tropisme.

Her artistic adventure began during a trip to the American West Coast, where a happy accident led her to befriend local potters. There, she discovered a community rich in unique stories, where everyone had followed a unique path to ceramics. This human diversity gave rise to the idea of becoming a ceramicist.

After several years of study and work in London, Yarra decided to return to France. She took turning lessons with the ceramist Bérangère Noyau in Samois-sur-Seine. In 2021, she obtained the professional aptitude certificate for ceramic turning.

Stoneware fired at high temperature

In her workshop, Yarra shapes stoneware objects fired at high temperatures. His creations, rustic and modern at the same time, feature sand and brown tones and chamotte textures, evoking the organic state of the earth. The sober and refined lines of his pieces testify to his technique and precision. His inspirations come from his travels to Japan, English folklore and his childhood memories shared between the forest of Fontainebleau and the summers on his grandparents' farm in Minnesota.

She imagines her pieces as anchored in everyday rituals or as objects to share during convivial moments. "I’I have always been fascinated by culinary traditions and the subtle relationship that arises between food and the containers that accompany it, she explains. Thanks to clay, I was able to explore my creativity in depth, align my values with my daily life, rediscover my inspirations and design a life in my image. Art is a multidisciplinary energy in which I wish to venture and redefine myself."

Collaborations with artists

Among her future projects, Yarra plans collaborations with local artists and experiments to create new unique and sculptural pieces. You can discover his creations on his site. She also shares her know-how through courses and internships at the Halle Tropisme.
