Faced with the closed media library in Pissevin, the great success of the “A book in your mailbox” operation

Une initiative destinée à éveiller le goût de la lecture chez les plus jeunes. Midi Libre – NR

More than 2,500 books were distributed in Nîmes, in the districts of Pissevin-Valdegour this Wednesday, February 28. Something to delight young and old.

The initiative launched by Joël Baptiste and his Cultural Travels association was joined by numerous partners. It saw the light of day on Wednesday February 28, when the books were placed in mailboxes in the Pissevin-Valdegou district.

While the media library has been closed since the death of young Fayed, this initiative "gives access to culture", rejoices Azzouz Raouf, director of the Mille Couleurs social center in Pissevin. "The population of the neighborhood is often far from books. There is a lot of talk about reaching out to the residents. So why not distribute books to them ?".

Amal Couvreur, vice-president of the Gard department and regional advisor, welcomes this initiative:"This’is a great step forward! As we are used to talking about what is wrong in the neighborhoods, this operation is a breath of fresh air for elected officials and residents alike. The book has not disappeared from the neighborhoods. It’s super innovative to go to a neighborhood like this to distribute books. It's respecting people by offering them the opportunity to have access to books and reading.

Children delighted by the operation

"It’s a great initiative to reawaken the taste for reading in little ones. We have already carried out free book operations, each time it is a success. We hope that this will give children a taste for reading again and that it will take them away from screens a little bit", underlines Lekbir Sriri, coordinator of the Ajronaa association.< /p>

It remained to be seen whether the enthusiasm would be there. The smile on some children's faces was arguably the best indicator of success. "I'm happy to have a book, it will teach me and force me to read. This is a good initiative because there are many children who could not read. I hope to have an adventure book, explains Yassine, 12 years before discovering her two books.

The operation is a godsend for Tesnime, 11 years old, who "likes reading and discovering stories" . Aged 9, Selma was also impatiently awaiting her books: "I'm happy to have a book today, it increases my reading possibilities ! Especially since I read every week.
