Firecracker throwing during the Montpellier-Clermont match at the Mosson stadium: the alleged perpetrator and accomplice tried this Thursday

The facts occurred on October 8, during the 8th day of Ligue 1, at the Mosson stadium, in Montpellier. The projectile exploded very close to the Clermont goalkeeper. The match was interrupted in the 91st minute, and finally replayed on November 29.

The man suspected of having thrown a firecracker on the lawn of the Mosson stadium during the Montpellier-Clermont match, last October 8, as well as his alleged accomplice, will be judged this Thursday, May 2, before the Montpellier criminal court. The projectile exploded near the Clermont goalkeeper, Mory Diaw. Evacuated on a stretcher, he benefited from one day of total incapacity for work (ITT).

Prosecuted for "violence with use or threat of a weapon"

The defendant, aged 24, is being prosecuted for "violence with use or threat of a weapon resulting in an ITT of less than eight days" during a sporting event and "use of rockets or fireworks in a sports venue." His alleged accomplice, aged 22, is suspected of having handed the firecracker to the first. He must answer for "possession of a rocket or fireworks in a sports arena during a sporting event."

Match replay

The Clermont goalkeeper had filed a complaint, as had the MHSC and Clermont Foot 63. This meeting of the 8th day of Ligue 1  had to be interrupted in the 91st minute of play, while Montpellier led 4-2. The match was replayed behind closed doors on November 29, and ended in a draw, 1-1. The Montpellier club was sanctioned with a firm withdrawal of one point in the standings, and one suspended point.

"The Firecracker Affair" had marked a halt to the dynamics of the MHSC which subsequently found itself in difficulty over a series of matches.
