Gas leak after an excavator hit a pipe: evacuations and disrupted traffic near Montpellier

The gendarmes intervened this Monday, February 19 in Castelnau-le-Lez, due to a gas leak caused by an incident during work, in the area of ​​avenue de l' Europe.  

An unfortunate excavator blow caused a gas leak on a pipe this Monday, February 19 at the start of the afternoon in Castelnau-le-Lez, on the immediate outskirts of Montpellier. The incident occurred at the intersection of Avenue de l'Europe, a busy road, and Allée du Stadium.

Car and tram traffic cut off

Car and tram traffic had to be interrupted. The gendarmes intervened to manage this situation which continued until around 3 p.m. The police also evacuated around ten people: local residents living in individual houses, as well as customers of a neighboring restaurant.

Between 200 and 300 homes were deprived of gas while repairs were carried out.
