Golden Globes: explosion for “Oppenheimer”, honors for “Anatomy of a Fall”

Golden Globes: déflagration pour "Oppenheimer", honneurs pour "Anatomie d'une chute"

The Golden Globes were marked on Sunday by the explosion “Oppenheimer”, big winner of the ceremony, and the shelving of the “Barbie” doll, also with honors supported for the French film “Anatomie d'une Chute”, rewarded with two trophies.

Christopher Nolan's biopic about the father of the atomic bomb received five awards and won all the major categories: best drama film, best director, best actor for Cillian Murphy, who plays Robert Oppenheimer, and best supporting role for Robert Downey Jr, who lends his features to a politician, great rival of the scientist.

“A great story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons. Does it have a chance of working ? No,” joked Mr. Downey Jr. “Unless Universal is banking on Christopher Nolan to direct Cillian Murphy. “

For his part, Christopher Nolan had a modest triumph.

“As filmmakers, we bring people together and try to get them to be their best,” the “Inception” and “Interstellar” creator explained. paying tribute to its actors.

“Barbie”, another favorite of the evening, was however shunned by the jury. The voters preferred “Poor Creatures”, already honored with the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, for the title of best comedy.

In the same logic, it was Emma Stone and her role as the female Frankenstein in this fanciful film, who was voted best actress, rather than the interpreter of the peroxide doll, Margot Robbie.

Nominated nine times, Greta Gerwig's feminist satire, which sees Barbie discover the misogyny of the real world, had to settle for two secondary awards: the new Golden Globe for best commercial success – logically awarded after its overwhelming domination at the box office l last year – and that of the best song.

“Barbie” was also beaten for the best screenplay prize by the French film “Anatomie d'une Chute”, which doubled the prize by winning the title of best foreign language film. Enough to confirm the universal appeal of the last Cannes Palme d'Or.

Emue, its director Justine Triet recounted her surprise at seeing her feature film, which recounts the trial of a writer accused of the murder of her husband and dissects the collapse of their much-loved relationship.

While writing with her partner Arthur Harari, “we kept telling ourselves that we were having a lot of fun, but that no one would go see this film,” she explained. According to her, the feature film “deals with the truth and the impossibility of pinning it down.”

This double success risks causing regrets in France, because “Anatomy of a Fall” will not be able to claim the Oscar for best international film. He was snubbed to represent France in favor of “Passion de Dodin Bouffant”, a historical romance between two gastronomes.

The media hype around the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which filled theaters around the world this summer, was timely to restore luster to the Golden Globes, recently bought and reformed by private investors.

Long considered a springboard to the Oscars, Hollywood's former favorite party has been undermined by corruption and racism scandals in recent years.

To get out of this bad situation, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which had created these awards and focused accusations of ethical breaches and amateurism, was dissolved. The new organization has greatly diversified the jury, inviting critics from all over the world.

Reforms mischievously welcomed by Robert Downey Jr, again.

“To the Golden Globes journalists: thank you for changing the rules of your game, and therefore your name”, said the actor, rewarded for his supporting role in “Oppenheimer”.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Oprah Winfrey… The elite were present this year, far from the boycott of the ceremony in 2022.

After the actors' and screenwriters' strike which paralyzed it for six months, Hollywood seemed ready to give up and eager to restart the promotional machine before the Oscars in March.

The only notable exception, comedian Ricky Gervais, who had presented the ceremony in the past, was absent despite his award for best stand-up show.

Among other headliners, Lily Gladstone won the award for best actress in a drama film, for her role as a Native American faced with capitalist greed and a series of murders in her tribe, in Scorsese's historical fresco “Killers of the Flower Moon”.

“It’s a historic victory, it doesn’t just belong to me,” underlined the Native American actress.

On the television side, “Succession”, a chronicle of the power struggles within a family at the head of a media empire, dominated, with the prize for best drama series and awards for its actors: Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen.

The series “The Bear”, which delves into the back kitchen of a Chicago restaurant, dominated the comedy categories.

Finally, the American-Korean production “Acharnés” won the award for best mini-series.
