“I love this adrenaline, I need it”, the young motorcycle rider from Thézan, Fabio Pilato, conquers Spain in the Red Bull Rookie Cup
The young Thézanais is getting ever closer to his limits.
At 15 years old, Fabio Pilato wants to live off his passion for motorcycling.
A motorbike rider since he was seven, young Fabio Pilato is competing in the Red Bull Rookie Cup this week in Spain. Like many professional riders, such as Johann Zarco, he hopes to get noticed there.
“Can I do like you ?”, that's how Fabio Pilato's biker career began. An admirer of his dad, an amateur motorbike rider, the young Thézanais started riding motorbikes at the age of 7. Very quickly, everything accelerated.
“When I was eight, I went to attend a detection, remembers the young biker. I went there to watch but I was offered to try, right from the beginning, I was spotted by Johann Zarco (one of the best French drivers, editor's note). So I did two years of apprenticeship with Laurent Fellon (former pilot and manager of Johann Zarco, Editor's note)."
Very promising results
While his parents describe him as a rather reserved, shy child, young Fabio transforms when he rides his motorbike. At only nine years old, he finished in second place in the French PW Cup championship, his first official race in the youth categories.
The good results continued for the Thézanais who dominated the podiums on the national and international scene, with notably a third place in the Qatar Mini GP and a second position in the 12 hours of Mora Ebre, in Spain. It is also on this circuit that he trains: “The closest circuit is four hours from here, near Tarragona,” he says. “Sometimes, we are lucky enough to be able to drive at Caussiniojouls, on the karting circuit", adds Aurélien Pilato, his father but also his manager and his coach.
“A young man who learns very quickly"
Every weekend, father and son go to Spain to train or to the races, because this season, Fabio is entered in the Mir Racing Cup. During the week, he does physical preparation on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On weekends, he eats up the miles on the circuits, riding his motorbike.
Today, his dad believes in him. “If we are here, it is because there is something,emphasizes Aurélien Pilato. The more we advance, the more I realize his potential. He learns very very quickly. Despite his lack of training, he manages to perform against young people who practice every day."
While he only sees motorcycling as his future, the young Thézanais knows that he will have to make a choice quickly for the future in order to be able to train daily. Surely with a departure for Spain. This week, he is also entered in the Red Bull Rookie Cup where he hopes to get noticed, as many professional drivers have done before him.
A taste for risk
In a sport where you are constantly flirting with your limits, it is not always easy for Fabio's parents. Especially his mother, Stéphanie. “I don't watch the races all the time, it depends on how I feel, she admits. There are times when I can't, it's difficult. But, besides that, he is so fulfilled on the bike, we don't force him so we try to support him.”
With his head on his shoulders, Fabio approaches the subject of accidents without flinching, he has already fallen himself. “I know there are risks, that the fall can happen at any moment, I live it very well, he advances. Every turn, every braking, every acceleration can be the last, it's the game, it's the race. I love this adrenaline, I need it.”
