May 1st lily of the valley: why this plant is potentially toxic ?

Le muguet, une plante (potentiellement) toxique

Each end of April marks the return of lily of the valley. An odorous flower believed to bring good luck… but which contains irritating substances as well as toxic derivatives.

Every May 1st is an opportunity to offer a sprig of lily of the valley, supposed to bring good luck to the person who receives it. However, thrush is not without danger. In fact, all parts of lily of the valley contain irritating and toxic substances: saponosides, responsible for digestive disorders, and cardiotoxic glycosides which have an effect on the heart muscle and blood circulation.

And if, from the stem to the bells through the leaves, all parts are concerned, the same goes for the water in which the lily of the valley has stayed. Poisoning is thus made possible when the quantities absorbed are large. In fact, cases of poisoning only rarely, if at all, concern adults. But rather young children.

In the event of poisoning, digestive problems (mouth irritation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) may appear. Then, cardiac problems may occur with slowing of the heart and rhythm disturbances.

Fortunately, cases of poisoning are only rarely observed. Accidental ingestion is in fact generally without consequence because the quantities taken are too small.

Better to warn

However, keep in mind that ingesting thrush can sometimes be serious. To prevent any risk, teach children that even if the plant is pretty, it is poison; put the vases up high, do not leave water soiled by a bouquet lying around on the table, especially if the vase is a glass of water. And if swallowed, seek advice from a poison control center.

Animals too

Thrush can also be toxic in animals, primarily cats. But also dogs, rabbits and birds.

"Young or very old animals are more likely to present serious symptoms", warns the Animal Poison Control Center and environment of the West (Nantes). "The problems begin between 15 minutes and 6 hours after ingestion, with repeated vomiting, associated with salivation. Diarrhea, sometimes hemorrhagic, accompanied by abdominal pain may also be present. In the hours following digestive symptoms, nervous disorders may appear: convulsions, uncoordinated movements, tremors. At the end of its evolution, the animal remains prostrate and lying on its side."
