The mayor who broke down a barrier exempted from punishment

#MONTPELLIER Jean-Luc Meissonnier, mayor of Baillargues, appeared this Wednesday, May 22, before the judicial court to answer for the destruction of the barrier of the reception area for travelers, last November 30, in Castries.

Exasperated by the repeated presence of a group of caravans in front of businesses in his town, he used his backhoe loader to enter the area despite its closure. A spectacular action which caused a stir. The Montpellier Metropolis had filed a complaint for destruction of property.

The Baillarguois elected official, who faced five years of imprisonment, 75,000 euros; fine and a sentence of ineligibility, was finally exempted from sentence. He had already reimbursed the costs incurred from his own funds for an amount of 17 121 € and presented his apologies publicly at a meeting of the Metropolis council.

Potentially dangerous monkey seized

#SÉRIGNANThis Tuesday, May 21, agents from the French Biodiversity Office and the gendarmes seized a marmoset illegally detained by a couple. They were denounced by their neighbors who denounced too much noise on a balcony. The animal, a male whose age has not yet been formally indicated, was discovered, tied with a leash.

He had been properly treated for years by his owners but it is forbidden to keep a primate in France. The owners were unable to provide administrative documents concerning this animal.

#PYRENEES-ORIENTALES During his visit to the Catalan country on the theme of drought, this Wednesday, May 22, Christophe Béchu , Minister of Ecological Transition, clarified his position on the La Raho golf project. In the summer of 2023, 212 people drowned in the region

#OCCITANIE Between June 1 and September 30, 2023, 1,336 drownings were recorded in France, leading to the death of 361 people. A stable figure, but down significantly in Occitanie, where 212 people drowned compared to 266 in 2022, recalls Public Health France, which urges caution before the start of the summer season.

Nationally, 55% of drownings involved adults, those most exposed to the risk of death. Children under 6 years old represent 30% of drowned people. And 16-17 year olds are victims at 15%. Occitanie is unsurprisingly one of the most affected regions, due to its climate and its large coastline, behind Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (271 drownings).

The philosophy remains the same: "we want to discover the high plateaus of Aubrac and areas with wilder sides & quot;, confide the organizers.
