Rue de la Comtesse, a particularly cramped thoroughfare…

A little flashback is in order. On December 15, 2023, the social landlord Un Toit pour tous submitted, despite fierce opposition from local residents, a request for a building permit on a plot of land of 970 square meters, located at 25 rue de la Comtesse, in order to create a building comprising 12 accommodations on 3 levels. All in place of a small house with a large garden full of trees.

In addition to the destruction of trees and biodiversity, this project is also, in the eyes of residents, "oversized given the narrowness of the street and its influence on the plot.Residents who point out a major problem concerning accessibility standards, required for emergency and fire vehicles. Residents, supported by the Oliviers-Route de Beaucaire neighborhood committee, chaired by Gérard Scola, have been mobilizing since July 2022 to preserve their green neighborhood with human-sized houses.

A first petition, launched in September 2022, gathered 110 signatures from residents of the streets directly concerned (Comtesse and Alfred-de-Musset). Despite this, meetings with elected officials and the lessor had no effect on the project. After the permit was filed, a second petition circulated in January 2024 in the neighborhood and beyond the streets directly concerned. It collected 567 signatures. The very favorable response received from all local residents, faced with the same problem, demonstrates, if necessary, the attachment to the specificity of their neighborhood.

< p>The PLU (Local Urban Plan) indicates that it is necessary to densify the city "build the city on the city". But, for the inhabitants of Oliviers, "this building project is to build the city mainly on the gardens. In this period of global warming, concreting green spaces increases the risk of flooding and promotes heat islands; is it coherent and reasonable ?" The local residents are determined to contest this construction project by all legal means, having a growing feeling of abandonment and downgrading. And they wonder: "What is the town hall's plan for the neighborhood and for the city ?"
