Squatted by a couple for months, he is banned from approaching within 150 meters of their house

A homeowner complains that he lost the right to access his home after a judge ruled against squatting in his garage. This American has even received an injunction to remove him from his property.

“I didn't mean to throw them out, I was just trying to be nice”, Toma tells the American media Wave. When several months ago, he saw this young couple on the street after their car broke down, the thirty-year-old decided to let them sleep in his garage while he repaired their vehicle.

However, over time, the two young people moved in with him in Louisville, even changing the lock on the property. Now, he is no longer allowed to go near his own house.

Welcomed for a few days

It all starts when the couple arrives in front of his house. Unable to continue their journey because of a car breakdown, they ask to be put up in the garage for a few nights. Toma accepts. He sets up a mattress for them in the room and lets them sleep there for a few days.

However, the couple quickly settled in at his place. The few days turned into weeks and they paid no rent. The two young people even made sure to receive their mail at his place, and changed the lock on the garage.

Restraining Order

Seeing that the situation is taking an unexpected turn, Toma asks them to leave. But the two young people refuse: “I tried to tell them to leave. They started saying they had squatter's rights,”, he says.

Toma publishes a fake 30-day eviction notice, which the two squatters do not respect. They end up having a physical altercation and the couple files for a protective order against Toma.

Unaware that Toma was the owner of the house, the judge granted the order and gave him a 150-meter restraining order around his house.

Today, “I have been homeless for a few days. The bills are in my name. “I have some things to take care of and I also want to sleep in my own bed,” the landlord complains.

According to our colleagues across the Atlantic, Toma should have filed a formal eviction notice with a court for proceedings to be initiated.

He is also due to appear in court this week to contest the injunction to remove him from his home. Wave adds that the couple has just left the accommodation.
