Disney Studios announced Wednesday that their next blockbuster, Strange World, will not be released in theaters In France ; it will be broadcast directly on its online platform Disney+. A decision which will have consequences for French cinemas. The animation giant intends with this decision to make an impact on the French authorities.

This is the “consequence of the media chronology as practiced in France which we consider unfair, restrictive and unsuitable for the expectations of our audiences“, Disney President France, Hélène Etzi, told Les Échos. This chronology, which was revised in January 2022, governs the dates on which films can be broadcast in theaters, on streaming platforms, on VOD, DVD, Blu -ray and on television.

In France, you have to wait four months to have a film released in theaters on DVD, VOD or Blu-ray, six months to see it on Canal+, 15 on Netflix, 17 on Amazon Prime and Disney+ ( which is not a signatory to the agreement) and 22 months on free TNT channels.

These 17 months necessary to be able to broadcast its works on its own streaming platform, it is far too long in the eyes of Disney, which also complains about an exclusivity window (five months) well too short before seeing your film switch to free channels.

This unprecedented decision is a hard blow for French cinemas, which are already going through a difficult period. Disney specifies, however, that this decision only concerns Strange World. The release of Buzz Lightyear, another Disney animated feature film, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 22. On the other hand, nothing has yet been decided for two other major productions on which cinemas are counting to regain their health: Black Panther and the new < em>Avatar.
