Departure and return directions, what are we talking about ?

Departure and return directions, understanding these expressions is essential to correctly interpret traffic forecasts.

Bison futé talks about departure directions with regard to journeys from Paris to regional cities, and from the latter towards the coasts in the summer and ski resorts in the winter.

Logically, the return direction is the one that leaves the coasts in the summer and ski resorts in winter towards regional metropolises, and from these towards the capital.

Saturday

Saturday will be the worst day of the weekend, since the entire country is classified as black in the direction of departures. “Traffic will be very difficult from dawn until evening on the North-South transit motorways (A7, A10 and A75). The main roads serving the Atlantic coast (A63 and N165) and the Mediterranean coast (A8, A9 and A61) will also be very busy”, warns Bison Futé.

Concerning the direction of returns, the roads will also be busy. The whole of France is in red, the Ile-de-France in black. “All major roads will experience very heavy traffic from mid-morning. The A7, A9 and A10 motorways will have the greatest difficulties. In Île-de-France, returns should be recorded between mid-afternoon and early evening (mainly on the A10 motorway) and could cause occasional traffic jams", the site specifies.

Sunday

Traffic will be less disrupted for this last day of the weekend. Even if slowdowns are expected in both the departure and return directions.

The A7 and A75 motorways are expected to experience the main traffic jams of the day. In Île-de-France, traffic will be very dense towards the toll barriers of the A6 and A10 motorways. Some slowdowns could appear in the early hours of the morning on these routes, however, it is not until mid-morning that traffic should significantly increase.

For return trips, difficulties are expected on the A7 motorway and to a lesser extent on the A9, A63 and A75 motorways. In Île-de-France, the expected flows at the various toll barriers will be relatively high. Traffic difficulties could be experienced between mid-afternoon and late evening, when traffic will be at its heaviest at the toll barriers.
