A Saturday evening, in Saint-Hilaire-de-Brethmas, in the heart of the night market, to get to know and give a voice to those who drive local life: elected officials, associations, traders.

Located seven kilometers from Alès, Saint-Hilaire-de-Brethmas is a small town halfway between the countryside and the city. Its population continues to grow each year, going from 1,271 inhabitants in 1936 to 4,600 today. All these Saint-Hilairois can count on various stakeholders committed to improving, animating and promoting their territory. Whether artists, elected officials, shopkeepers or restaurateurs, all sectors are full of talent. Some of them have also taken advantage of the Summer Tour to present themselves on the Midi Libre media set (portraits below). Among them, Nicolas Gal, painter, visual artist and screenwriter, works all year round in collaboration with the town hall. He reinvents road signs and gives lessons at the leisure center. It is possible to see his know-how directly at Mont Aigoual. «  I created the scenography of the Climatographe, an observatory located at an altitude of 1567 meters », he adds. Jean-Marie and André, for their part, lead cycling lessons with their association Cyclo-évasion, which has more than 120 members. « We practice cycle tourism all year round, rides to admire the surroundings,” adds André, president of the club.

A community in full evolution

This small town is even home to a great chef. Sébastien Rath and his wife, Gwladys Rath, owner of the downtown gourmet restaurant Le Saint-Hilaire, obtained their first star in the Michelin Guide last March. « This makes him the first head of the Alès Agglomération territory to win a star », underlines Mayor Jean-Michel Perret. And that's not all: the restaurant also retains its green star rewarding establishments combining culinary excellence and compliance with environmental standards.
The mayor does not spare his efforts either and continues to bring projects to propel his municipality.«  Most schools are closing classes, we are creating two more. We have also installed a city stadium so that residents can play basketball, football and handball. » In addition, an eco-district will be created with social housing and homes for families: «  We have focused on environmental innovation with local materials such as wood from the Cévennes. It is a virtuous project and a demonstration of what must be done in the future”, he concludes.
