Teachers from Montpellier and Hérault sign a platform and demand a ceasefire in Gaza

Hérault teachers want the government to “take a clear position for a ceasefire in Gaza” Midi Libre – C.F

They are teachers of history-geography, maths, French, in high school, middle schools or primary schools, in Montpellier and throughout Hérault and have just launched a petition which serves as a forum for an immediate and definitive ceasefire in Gaza.

"As teachers, we cannot remain silent, we are doubly concerned by the massacres in Gaza", declares Sabine Raynaud, primary school teacher in  Montpellier, this Friday 5 January, under the lights of the brasserie le Dôme. "This is an initiative of teachers, but above all of citizens, addressed to the population" she adds, to qualify the platform of teachers from schools, colleges and high schools of Montpellier de l'Hérault, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. This petition, which brings together 80 signatories, expresses the indignation of its signatories in the face of the massacres perpetrated in Gaza. France has lost all credibility in its image of a country of defense of human rights and a country of Enlightenment,” says Amélie Poulay, professor of documentation.

"What we are seeing today is not a war against Hamas"

For more than two months, "the situation in Gaza has been apocalyptic” condemns Audrey Marc, history and geography teacher in a Montpellier high school, before clarifying her position: "Palestine is no longer a viable territory. What we are seeing today is not a war against Hamas. With each attack, it is the civilian populations who suffer. And if this forum firmly condemns the operations carried out by the IDF, it aims above all to demand from the French government a clear position in favor of a ceasefire. fire. "There there is a leaden cover on the part of the government to slow down and make demonstrations of support for Palestine invisible”, notes Sabine.

"Our role is to give students factual elements of understanding"

These teachers from schools, colleges or high schools say they want to "seek to avoid for our students that they have a dichotomous vision of the world  ;quot;, underlines Françoise Sarda, professor of literature. "And we explain that condemning Israel's offensive has nothing to do with to do with anti-Semitism,” adds Audrey Marc. "In fact, our role is to offer students factual elements to understand this conflict, diversify the sources, without entering into a political discourse", summarizes Laurence Peter-North, history teacher- geography in high school.
